How many types of dredging grabs are there?

Oct 17, 2025

Dredging grabs can be categorized into three main types based on their structural design and functional applications: clam shell grab buckets, heavy-duty grabs,  and multi-jaw/orange peel grabs. Each type is optimized for specific underwater conditions and material types.

Clam Shell Grab Buckets:
These are specialized for dredging or catching pebbles, sand, and granular materials. Their design features a single-spindle bucket body with a lightweight structure, enabling high grabbing ratios and strong closing forces.

The material filling rate is optimized for efficient excavation in soft sediments.

Heavy-Duty Grabs:
Engineered for digging clay, gravel, and slab soil, these grabs are robust and capable of handling cohesive materials. Their strength and durability make them suitable for demanding underwater conditions where harder soils are present.

Composed of three or more jaws, these grabs are versatile and can adapt to various underwater environments. They are particularly useful in complex scenarios where multiple material types or irregular shapes need to be handled.

Classification by Driving Method:

Mechanical Grabs:
Operated by mechanical systems, these grabs are typically driven by four-rope or double-rope mechanisms. They are suitable for general dredging tasks and are known for their reliability and simplicity.

Classification by Lifting Type:

Four-Rope Mechanical Grabs:
These grabs use four ropes for lifting and closing, offering stability and control during operation. They are ideal for heavy-duty dredging in deep waters.

Double-Rope Mechanical Grabs:
Simpler in design, these grabs use two ropes for lifting and closing. They are lightweight and suitable for shallower dredging projects or tasks requiring less force.
