What is a clamshell dredge grab?

Jul 23, 2025

The clamshell dredger grab (abbreviated as "clamshell grab") is the core operating component of the clamshell dredger, named for its clamshell-like opening and closing action when closed. It is a steel grabbing device that can grab, lift, and unload underwater materials through mechanical control, and is widely used in dredging, port construction, underwater engineering, and other fields.

Structure and composition of the clamshell dredge grab
 CLAMELL DREDGERSCore components
Bucket blades:
Material: High-strength steel, with wear-resistant linings on the surface to extend service life.
Types:
Flat-mouth clamshell dredge grab: The inner side of the bucket blade is straight, suitable for grabbing loose soft soil.
Semi-curved grab: The inner side of the bucket blade is curved, which enhances the ability to grab hard soil or gravel.
Full-curved grab: The bucket blade is highly curved, suitable for rock or hard formations.
Hinges and connectors:
The clamshell dredge grab bucket blades are connected by hinges to allow opening and closing movements, and some models are equipped with bearings to reduce friction.

Control mechanism of the clamshell dredging grab:
Wire rope system: Traditional models use two wire ropes to control the opening and closing of the grab (one for closing and the other for lifting).
Hydraulic system: Modern models use hydraulic cylinders to achieve more precise movement control.
Lifting lugs and connecting devices:
There are lifting lugs on the top of the grab for connection to the boom or crane of the dredger.
