How to use a 40-foot container tilter to lift a 40-foot container?

Sep 26, 2025

When using a 40' container tilting device (Container Tilter) to lift a 40 container, you must follow the standardized operating procedures and perform systematic operations in combination with the equipment characteristics and specifications.

Pre-operation Preparation
Equipment Inspection and Parameter Verification
Check the rated load on the container tilter's nameplate (usually marked in a conspicuous location on the equipment) to ensure the maximum load capacity is not exceeded. For example, some models, such as the ST-CT40, are designed specifically for 40-foot containers; confirm that the load capacity matches the gross weight of the container (including cargo).
Inspect the integrity of the hydraulic system, electrical circuits, and structural components (such as guide wheels and twistlock mechanisms) to ensure there are no leaks, cracks, or loose parts.
Verify that the guide devices (such as guide claws and guide rails) are functioning properly to prevent container deflection and jamming during lifting.

Equipment Positioning and Securing
Move the tilting mechanism directly above the container and adjust the position so the guide claws are aligned with the container's centerline (the deviation must be within ±200 mm).
Lock the equipment's floor lock to prevent movement during operation.

Connecting the spreader to the container
Lower the spreader so that the twistlock head aligns with the oval hole in the corner fitting of the container. Some equipment, such as telescopic spreaders, requires hydraulic adjustment to accommodate 40-foot containers.
When the twistlock head is fully inserted, the push rod pushes back, triggering a travel switch. This activates the electrical circuit in the twistlock drive mechanism, locking the twistlock.
After confirming the twistlock is locked, the lifting mechanism raises the spreader to maintain a clearance (typically 50-100 mm) between the spreader and the container roof, preventing automatic unlocking during air transport.

Container Lifting and Transfer
Slowly lift the container to a safe height (usually no less than 2 meters) and confirm that the spreader is securely connected to the container.
Use the side shift cylinder to adjust the container's lateral position to align it with the target location (e.g., truck or yard). Some container tilter is equipped with a float valve that automatically adjusts the spreader to the center position after lifting to reduce chain deflection.
