What's the Classification of the Grab Bucket?

Nov 10, 2025

To accommodate different types of cranes using grab buckets for loading and unloading various types of bulk cargo, grab buckets come in many structural forms. Commonly used grab buckets are also categorized according to the crane's lifting capacity and the type of bulk cargo. The table below provides a rough classification of grab buckets; within each category, several different structural variations often arise.

Grab Bucket Classification.

Based on the working principle of closed systems  According to the shape and arrangement of the jaw plates

Rope grab (rope-driven grab opening and closing). Multi-rope grab A: Multi-rope grab equipped with a vertical closing pulley system (e.g., double-rope or four-rope long strut double-jaw plate grab).

B: Multi-rope grab equipped with a horizontal closing pulley system (e.g., double-rope or four-rope grab or scissor grab)

C: Multi-rope grab equipped with sprockets or gears (2). Single-rope grab

Bulk Cargo Grab

Double Jaw Grab

Longitudinal Grab

Transverse Grab

Multi-Jaw Grab

Special Purpose Grab

Electric grab bucket

Electro-mechanical grab bucket

Electro-hydraulic grab bucket

2. Excavating grab bucket

(Double-jaw grab bucket)

(Multi-jaw grab bucket)

3. Hydraulic and pneumatic grabs (the grab opens and closes by being supplied with pressurized oil or compressed air by the lifting machinery).

Based on bulk cargo capacity, grab buckets can also be classified into light-duty grab buckets (<1.2t/m³),

medium-duty grab buckets (1.2~2.0t/m³),

heavy-duty grab buckets (2.1~2.6t/m³), and extra-heavy-duty grab buckets (>2.6t/m³).
