Theport hopper is a rigid container designed for receiving, storing, and supplying bulk materials. It plays a crucial role in coordinating and balancing the operation between grab buckets and conveyor systems on clamshell dredgers, maximizing equipment efficiency.
Types of Hoppers:
Traditional Forms:
Square Hopper: As shown in Fig. 7-3-24 a.
Circular Hopper: As shown in Fig. 7-3-24 e.
Extended Port Hoppers:
Formed by connecting several square hoppers, as depicted in Fig. 7-3-24 g. Removing the middle wall and replacing it with a discharge outlet creates a slotted hopper, as shown in Fig. 7-3-24 j. These hoppers feature straight walls and a fixed inclination angle, collectively known as linear hoppers. Additionally, there are curved hoppers with variable wall inclination angles, as illustrated in Fig. 7-3-24h.

Design Requirements for Port Hoppers:
Lightweight: Under conditions of sufficient strength and rigidity, the hopper should be as lightweight as possible.
Effective Capacity Utilization: The design should maximize the use of its effective capacity.
Smooth Discharge: Materials should be able to smoothly exit from the discharge outlet under self-weight.
Mechanized Transport Compatibility: The design should meet the production requirements of mechanized transport systems.
Construction and Materials:
Port hoppers are typically welded from steel plates and fixed onto supports.
To ensure smooth sliding of materials along the walls, the inner surface should be smooth and flat, often lined with lining plates.
Common lining materials include manganese steel plates, cast steel plates, stainless steel plates, and plastic plates. The choice depends on the material being handled, with considerations for wear resistance, non-stick properties, and cost.
Additional Features:
For materials that are difficult to control in size, such as raw coal and ore, the top of the port hoppers must be fitted with a grid to prevent blockage at the discharge outlet and to increase the overall rigidity of the port hopper, reducing deformation from external impacts.
